Jim Cantrell is often quoted in the trade press as an expert on the commercial space market, aerospace market conditions, launch vehicles, Elon Musk and SpaceX, new business competitions and industrial base matters. Jim also makes regular appearances on national news channels as a space subject matter expert for Fox Business, Fox News, CNBC, CNN, RT and Yahoo Finance. Jim’s extensive history in the industry, his simple style and ability to explain complex topics in a way easy for audiences to understand has made him a favorite and frequent guest on these channels.
Mr. Cantrell has also worked with political candidates and other staff members on space and defense policy matters where his broad view of the exterior political trends and their implications on the aerospace industry and industrial base has been valuable. Through his work in Europe, Russia and the US, Cantrell brings a Transatlantic perspective to space exploration history, future technology and space development, and technology and space policy debates.
Jim is currently working on a book entitled “Breaking All The Rules: the Inside Story Of the New Race To Space” which will be published in 2022. The book tells the story of the second space race and how it developed from the ashes of the post Apollo space program. It’s a story that uses Jim’s experiences as a vehicle to tell the story of the unlikely alliances, institutions and characters that are building the next trillion dollar economy: the space industry. This exciting new economy is the “next internet” and the amount of venture capital flowing into it resembles the early days of the internet boom.
Cantrell grew up in California and lives in Arizona with his family. Jim is an active member of the Libertarian Party who advocates human liberty and individual responsibility in public and private life and speaks often as a keynote at the national and state level conventions. He was educated at Utah State University in mechanical and aerospace engineering, speaks four languages and has spent 8 years of his career working in Europe and Russia.
